Module 02 Week 05

Use of Composition

For this assignment, we took a look at several different artists, their different art styles, and the way that they use solid compositions in their work. I really enjoyed Syd Mead's work and tried to imitate his art style, however it proved to be pretty difficult. I really couldn't tell what medium he was using, but I really enjoyed the textures and colors of his art. I kind of realized my composition looks nothing like my target artist, however our themes are similar at the very least.

Module 1 Week 04

Use of Basic Lighting

This week, we were provided with a UE5 project and told to arrange the scene however we would like, but also keeping in mind the light sources and object materials. Different materials will reflect, absorb, and refract light differently. I enjoyed playing with the provided materials and creating my own material instances and colors. In this specific scene, I created a square color harmony with Adobe Color Wheel. I'm happy with how this one came out!

Module 1 Week 04

Hierarchies In UE5 Animation & Rendering

This week, we were able to take our geometric scene from last weeks assignment and apply animations to our basic shapes utilizing Unreal Blueprints inside of UE5 Engine. I find Blueprints to be difficult sometimes because I feel that I lack the foundational programming logic in using them. They are definitely a lot easier than actually coding though. I wish I had given myself more time to play the lighting in my scene.

Week 03

 Use of Value & Contrast

This week we worked on creating a sense of depth with the use of value and contrast. This linework was provided by an artist named Pang P. The goal of this assignment was to get us to start thinking about how to add lighting to our scene. I did not provide myself enough references for this assignment and I feel like it lacks in certain areas. Some of the intricate shapes in the linework made it hard to decern what areas should be in the foreground, middle ground, and background.

Module 01 Week 03

Maya & The Use of Hierarchy + UE Rendering

Part 01

Part 02

Part 03

This week, we continued to explore simple geometric shapes and rendering within Unreal Engine and Maya. Through these rendering and lighting assignments, I've come to realize that I really enjoy lighting and rendering out scenes. It is a lot easier to render and light scenes within Unreal Engine than it is in Maya. I also enjoyed playing with the emissive materials and exploring the different things you can do with them in engine.

Module 1 - Week 02

Use of Silhouettes

This week we focused on creating different iterations and thumbnails for characters. Diversifying and exploring the different types of poses, personalities, and clothing was a lot of fun. Some of the thumbnails and silhouettes read better than others. However, that's the point of iteration! Finding what works and looks best. I chose to create a Sci-Fi Dracula character and play around with some robot/machinery type appendages and head gear.

Module 1 Week 02

 Basics of Topology

This week, we went into the basics of topology inside of Maya. The screenshots below show several different ways and work processes to reach the same or similar end results in Maya. I really enjoyed using the Soft Mod Falloff tool to modify the topology of a simple sphere. It reminded me of sculpting inside of ZBrush.

Module 1 Week 01

Use of Basic Shapes

The purpose of this assignment was to explore basic shapes and how they apply to character design. Initially, I had intentions to render these digital drawings in full color. However, as I completed these designs, I felt that the black and white gave the drawings more character. It reminded myself, and my roommates, of the Scary Stories You Tell In The Dark books. This made me happy to hear as I was going for a horror theme across the three characters/monsters.
